Are we still in the U.S?

Providence is popularly known as the Beehive of Industry and its center is called the Down City.
It might not be a very huge city, but we still found it charming and interesting actually, even though not many people have heard of it before. We felt comfortable and secure in this city. Following the war, Providence was the country's ninth-largest city with 7,614 people. By the turn of the twentieth century, the city boasted some of the largest manufacturing plants in the country. The city's industries attracted many immigrants from Ireland, Germany, Sweden, England, Italy, Portugal, Cape Verde, and French Canada. So that could explain why so many Italians are settled in this city, as we wrote in the previous post. There were also many people from other countries. And we clearly did hear some foreign languages when we walked down the streets of Providence, so it felt like not being in the States sometimes!

We found this stunning picture of Providence
in the past. It’s easy to see how the city has
grown and become more dignified since back then!
It was remarkable that new investment was triggered within the city, with new construction including numerous condo projects, hotels. Providence is a beautiful city, worth visiting. Despite new investment, poverty remains as a serious problem as it does in most post-industrial New England cities. Nearly 30 percent of the city population lives below the poverty line, but we didn’t get the feeling of this.
